Teaching Authority Panel

This panel will address how teachers, school media specialists, and other librarians can prepare students to find authentic and authoritative resources in the digital realm.

Marcia A. Mardis, Assistant Professor at Wayne State University's Library and Information Science Program, has led 6 NSF research projects that examined digital resources in science learning. A recognized quantitative and qualitative researcher, Dr. Mardis is active in building the research base in educational informatics. She is also one of the authors of AASL’s new Standards for 21st Century Student Learning.

Two forces, internet safety and Web 2.0, are competing to define authority in the K12 space. In her remarks, Dr. Mardis will discuss the tensions between filtering, academic freedom, and students' conceptions of credibility, connection, and creativity.
